Coronation Street star opens up on Christmas plot as she teases ‘wedding bells’

Coronation Street star Sue Devaney has opened up on the soap’s Christmas storyline as she hinted at “wedding bells”.

The 58-year-old actress portrays Debbie Webster on the popular ITV soap, a character who received an early-onset dementia diagnosis earlier this year.

Although Debbie initially concealed her condition from her loved ones, she has since gained the support of her brothers, Kevin (Michael Le Vell) and Carl (Jonathan Howard), plus sister-in-law Abi (Sally Carman).

Additionally, Debbie has reignited her relationship with Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), with the couple getting engaged during Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) wedding.

In recent episodes, Ronnie and Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) convinced Debbie to participate in a dementia choir at the community centre, reports the Daily Star.

Unfortunately, the practice session went awry, with Debbie being removed from the group after attempting to assume control. Returning to the Rovers, she made a plan to establish her own choir with Glenda.

Speaking on the red carpet at the National Television Awards on Wednesday (September 10), actress Sue hinted at the soap’s forthcoming Christmas narrative, which might focus on Debbie and Ronnie’s nuptials.

“Christmas, I hope there’s going to be wedding bells,” she revealed.

The star also suggested that the ceremony could include a special performance from the dementia choir, along with a potential “double act” storyline for Debbie and Glenda.

“I hope there’s going to be a bit of a choir going, a bit of a dementia choir going on. That’s what Glenda would do,” she revealed.

Sue then delved into how Debbie’s dementia journey might unfold in the future.

“I think it’s gonna be a journey and it’s gonna be a slow journey. I think there will be lots of highs, as well as lots of lows,” she elaborated.

“With any terminal illness, if you’ve been diagnosed with something, you think, ‘Right, I’ve only got so long to cram in everything I want to cram in to have a great time.’ So, maybe Debbie’s going in that direction before she deteriorates.”

The star previously disclosed that Debbie would remain on our screens for a while following her diagnosis.

Speaking on Lorraine back in June, Sue stated: “She’s not going anywhere yet! I know the story is going to go well into 2027, so Debbie’s not going anywhere
