‘When is ‘FBI’ Coming Back? How to Watch the Midseason Premiere
Key Points
- The “FBI” midseason finale saw the investigators take on a terrorist attack.
- The midseason finale aired on Dec. 15, 2025.
- Find out what happened and when the show returns.
The FBI midseason finale sent the show off (temporarily!) with a bang when everyone’s favorite agents had to grapple with a terrorist, torture and a teenage boy’s hubris. (On that note, beware of spoilers ahead for FBI Season 8 up to this point!)
The series is expected to pick up where some previous storylines left off, including in Maggie’s strained relationship with her sister Erin. (If you recall, in Season 5, Maggie told Erin that she felt humiliated when Erin was involved in a drug case that the bureau was investigating, and that she was ashamed that Erin suffered from addiction.)
“We’re going to see my sister again,” Missy Peregrym told TV Insider, speaking in the first person as her character. “I don’t feel great about it. It’s something I haven’t been able to repair and I feel awful about the fact that I think it’s my fault because I didn’t handle a situation well. And so the rift is too big and I can’t repair it.”
Star Jeremy Sisto previously told Parade that Jubal’s mental health may play a role in the rest of the season as well after seeing his son injured in the terror attack in the double-episode finale.
“Listen, we’re not going to get into it in the show because it’s not on HBO, but all law enforcement agents need to take their mental health very seriously,” he said. “The human mind is geared towards not handling trauma in the most effective way, and so Jubal—with his 12 step programs and commitment to his own self awareness—is going to get through this. He’s gotten through all of the stuff, or most of the stuff, without falling out of his sweet spot. He’s a pretty self-aware guy, but there’s always the chance with Jubal in particular, because of his inclination towards addiction. It’s always something to keep an eye on. I think I’ll make it through this one, but we’ll see. From what I hear from the people who’ve seen it, it does resonate pretty deeply.”

In a separate sitdown, Sisto told us that while he doesn’t get filled in on specific storylines ahead of time, he has some ideas of how FBI Season 8 may look.
“Times are changing. AI, technology, drones,” he said. “We’ve covered some of that stuff this year, some threats that are evolving. That’s really the interesting part. How this office is going to change, how it has to change in order to keep up with the possible bad guys and the technology there. I’m always interested in the kind of research they’ve done in terms of that and how to bring that to an exciting story.”
He added, “What I know will be there [are] these exciting stories, exciting twists. There’s a lot of different possible places that a threat can come from, sometimes less realistic than others. Sometimes it’s more of a play on an idea, and sometimes it’s things you’ve seen in the news. It’s like using all that, all of those colors at your disposal for a writer to paint a season that is unpredictable. Sometimes there are episodes that are less serious, sometimes there are ideas that you really don’t want to think about for too long, and they all take into consideration the real-life potential of this agency.”

When is Maggie leaving FBI?
Probably not any time soon! Missy Peregrym has previously stepped back from the role when she was on medical leave, but there’s been zero indication that the character will ever be gone for good.
Is the character Jubal leaving FBI?
Thankfully, no! Sisto is back for Season 8, and Jubal’s suspension storyline is finished. That said, in the Season 8 midseason finale, when Jubal tortures the Third Testament terrorist, he broke protocol in a big way, but probably won’t face much disciplinary action when the show returns.
Sisto told Parade, “That whole pressing on the wound thing, that wasn’t in the script. But that’s pretty bad. You can’t do that in real life. But the danger is so big that I think he’s going to not have to deal with too many consequences on this one. Look, after 9/11, some stuff happened that was maybe not within the ethical lines that we need to commit to, so that’s kind of what happened in this situation. He was motivated by the mother of his child to put that emotion into getting vengeance, and that’s an emotion that shouldn’t be—legally cannot be—part of [the work].”
