  • Harry Shum Jr. discussed his Grey’s Anatomy character, Dr. Kwan, being fired in the Season 22 finale of ABC’s long-running medical drama.
  • “I’m just as much in the dark as audiences,” Shum Jr. said of whether his character will return next season.
  • Shum Jr. even wondered, “Do audiences want to see him go or do they want to see him go back to the hospital?”

Grey’s Anatomy‘s Season 22 finale served up plenty of its usual drama, leaving fans with questions ahead of Season 23.

Amid a terrifying bridge collapse, there came a long-awaited engagement for Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh, a bittersweet goodbye to Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman and even a surprise hookup between Caterina Scorsone’s Amelia and Sophia Bush’s Cass. In one of the final moments of “Bridge over Troubled Water,” one of Grey Sloan Memorial’s newer physicians — Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) — was hit with a shocking firing.

Blue was fired by Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) after discovering the first-year surgical resident secretly administered an experimental, FDA-denied hydrogel to a liver cancer patient, a protocol violation Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) unsuccessfully tried to take the blame for.

Shum Jr. told E! News on Thursday that he appreciated the storyline, even if it does put his character’s fate up in the air.

“I think it’s good to see the doctors when they do make a mistake, but also with good intentions,” Shum Jr. said. “It wasn’t just because he was a bumbling mess.”

The Crazy Rich Asians star added, “It was very motivated in making sure that someone got to be able to choose life over death.”

Whether Shum Jr., who joined the ABC series in Season 19, will return next season is a big question mark even for the actor.

“I’m just as much in the dark as audiences,” he told the outlet. “But to me, it’s a hope of: Do audiences want to see him go or do they want to see him go back to the hospital?”

While Dr. Kwan could possibly walk the halls of Grey Sloan again, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver bid the medical drama goodbye with this season’s finale.

McKidd, who has appeared as Dr. Hunt since season 5 in 2008, opened up with Entertainment Weekly about his character’s exit while also getting a happy ending with Raver’s Dr. Altman. The star-crossed lovers, who’ve been on-again off-again throughout the series, got divorced earlier this season. By the finale, though, they decide to reunite and move to Paris together for Teddy’s new job opportunity as a research incubator.Kwan's Grey's Anatomy Season 21, Episode 8 Twist Is A Reminder Of Shum's Troubled Sequel To A $239M Hit

“There’ve been a lot of people dying on the show recently,” McKidd shared. “I’m not sure the show or the fans really have a stomach for that anymore, or at least not right now. Seeing a happy ending — a happy new chapter for Teddy — is a beautiful message to send out there. There’s a lot of darkness in the world at the moment.”
